I'm currently using ~/.local/share/mime in my home directory. It is
specified in the document at freedesktop.org as the standard location
for user's custom configuration.
I created the ~/.local/share/mime/packages directory, put geda.xml in
it and ran "update-mime-database" on it. This then created all other
files required for the mime database (I'm using Debian Testing).
I think there's an option to update-mime-database that will print out
database locations used on your system.
