How do you envisage version numbers to work in the future?

My gEDA packages are currently just versioned as '20070626' for example,
and our package manager doesn't consider 1.0.1 to be greater than
20070626. We have a solution to this called an epoch, which means the
version number would be 1:1.0.1 or 1:1.0.1.20070626, however the epoch
(1:) is a bit of an ongoing nuisance. So I would welcome your input
before I go ahead with it.
