In my view,

Graphical symbols are used to lable nets, such as the power and ground
symbols. So does gnetlist ignore them? Doesn't it at least use them to
name a net?

Hierarchical Symbols are a different beast. But, I also agree with
Stuart that the pins of the symbol have to make the connection to the
attached schematic.
