I'm suspicious that you have an automake which is too old. Which
versions of automake and autoconf do you have? The file README.cvs
should give some guidance (although not absolute) on required versions.
Such are the joys of tracking cvs sources instead of building from the
snapshots. I suppose it's probably about time for another snapshot.
