I'll just make this little response and then drop this thread.

Fair enough -- I won't disagree. That's why I think the best/easiest
way to modify gEDA is to enable promotion of pin attribues into the
.sch file so they may be edited directly on the schematic using gschem
or bulk edited in a spreadsheet using gattrib.
Note that we don't
promote all pins into the schematic in this scheme. Rather, we only
promote the ones which we want to overwrite with new pinnos. The
overwriting would be similar to that done for component refdeses,
except that the symbol would have a stock pinout which you could
overwrite at the schematic leve.
This approach is drop-dead simple (for the user), doesn't add a layer
of indirection, and has the side benefit that we want this feature
anyway since it is a precondition for backannotation from PCB.

Change the pins in gschem or gattrib using the above scheme.
