I don't know if this experience is of interest to you, but I use
git/cogito and qgit as part of my daily grind working with embedded
Linux (ppc) and u-boot. Both those projects are managed by git
servers.

I have to admit that by now my brain doesn't even bother with CVS
because my fingers already know the way, so anything not CVS is a
bit of an effort for me. But I have no complaints w/ git in the
cases where I do use it. It is indeed faster for day-to-day uses
such as seeing what I did and for making patches. It is also far
more flexible then CVS when it comes to branching and merging.
And, as has been pointed out, it can be used off-line, leading,
I presume, to lighter loads on the servers for day-to-day work.

The down side is git takes up non-trivial amounts of disk space.
The other down side is that it is still "new" compared to CVS,
and as my fingers are aware, there is bound to be much inertia
between you and git nirvana.
