I thought the suggestion was to make the GUI change the rc files, but stay with 
the local dir and user rc files.  The GUI could include a "reset to defaults" 
button and a "refresh from local rc file" button to save the adventurous from 
time burning.  I think the auto generated idea must have just been the starting 
point, like a "reset to defaults" point.

A known usable state of the rc files like when first installed.  Then a new user 
could have a version of the rc file in a text editor, try it, bomb, go back to 
defaults painlessly, change the  local rc file, refresh that in the GUI, and 
iterate to learn how to set something up.

I suggest not trying to make anyone use a particular text/programmer's editor, 
just explain how to use it in a another window at the same time as the GUI.
