gEDA-user: PCB layer names and colors --with-gui-lesstif

I'm having no luck in the docs, or hunting in ~/.pcb or /opt/pcb/share/pcb/Pcb
for the place to set Pcb.layerColor1  or Pcb.layerName1 or any layer.

the ~/.pcb/colors file does not change it either.  The local pcb-menu.res has 
nothing like that in it...

The names are overridden by names like  Gnd-sldr, but where?  .Xdefaults?
My ~/.Xdefaults only has
Pcb.lib-newlib: /home/john/EEProjects/now/circuitboards/footprints_pcb

in it....
